Sewage heat recovery at the sewage treatment plant Weinfelden

Project

Cold heat network through sewage heat recovery from the sewage treatment plant.

Project owner

Technische Betriebe Weinfelden AG

Initial situation

Hitherto unused waste heat from the purified sewage water of the sewage treatment plant shall be used as a source of energy.

Due to Klimarappen

Technische Betriebe Weinfelden AG uses the purified sewage water of the sewage treatment plant Weinfelden as a source of energy for a close-range district heating network. At the transfer station, a heat exchanger transmits the energy to the transmission network, operated with clean water, which channels it to users in the neighbouring industrial estate. The so-called cold pipeline is operated at a temperature level of 7°C to 17°C. In the summer, the sewage water is used for cooling.

Savings

The Climate Cent Foundation's contribution covers around 15% of extra costs. Annual emissions reductions amount to 90 tonnes of CO2.

Investments

The new district energy network with a heat source capacity of 907 kW triggers investment costs of almost one million Swiss Francs.

Additional cost

The installation's costs exceed those of the alternative by 423'000 Swiss Francs.
