Aerodynamic utility vehicles

Project

Improved aerodynamics of utility vehicles through the fitting of optimised spoilers and body parts reduces air resistance.

Project owner

Fankhauser AG

Initial situation

Today, utility vehicles of the 3.5 tonnes category are at best fitted with a simple roof spoiler or minimal aerodynamic body styling. Over the period 2007 to 2012, the company Fankhauser AG plans to fit 115 utility vehicles with additional effective aerodynamic modifications, making it possible to reduce fuel consumption by an average of 2 to 3 litres per 100 km.

Due to Klimarappen

Thanks to the Foundation, Fankhauser AG fits utility vehicles with spoilers and body parts which can reduce air resistance by up to 30 per cent. Reducing air resistance means lowering fuel consumption as well as increasing maximum speed and acceleration power.

Savings

Overall, CO2 reductions of 935 tonnes can be expected, equivalent to a fuel quantity of 358'000 litres.

Investments

The fitting of spoilers and body parts on 115 utility vehicles requires an investment of around 365'000 Swiss Francs. The Foundation's contribution covers around a third of this sum. The monitoring process is scientifically supervised by the Dynamic Test Center (DTC) in Vuffelin, in order to measure effective emission reductions.
