District heating system in Cartigny
Project
District heating system with woodchip heating.
Project owner
Municipality of Cartigny
Initial situation
A majority of households in Cartigny, a municipality that has been awarded the label “Energy City”, was equipped with individual fuel oil heating.
Due to Klimarappen
Thanks to the Foundation, since 2007 Cartigny has been commanding the canton’s largest wood-fired district heating system. It supplies six public buildings as well as 113 private households with the energy required for warm water and space heating. The new district heating centre houses a boiler with a capacity of 2'000 kW. A smaller boiler with a capacity of 650 kW covers peak loads. In order to connect further users to the district heating grid, room is available for a third boiler. Wood for the woodchips stems from the canton’s and the municipality’s own, sustainably managed forest, implying a short haulage distance and low transportation costs.
Savings
The woodchip facility supplies an annual 7’930 MWh, allowing savings of around 790'000 litres of fuel oil. Over the period 2007 to 2012, CO2 emissions can thus be reduced by 10'479 tonnes.
Investments
The project is supported by the canton Geneva with 150'000 Swiss Francs and by the Foundation with 850'000 Swiss Francs, for a total investment of 8.4 million Swiss Francs. Thanks to these contributions, the commune is able to provide competitive pricing.
