Hydropower plant in Xishui, China
Project
Each year, the 50 MW hydropower plant produces around 174 million kWh of electricity. No dam or reservoir was necessary, as the plant is located on the River Heihe. The generated electricity is fed into the power grid of Northwest Power Grid of China, replacing fossil electricity from coal-fired power plants.
Project owner
Gansu Zhangye Erlongshan Hydropower Co., Ltd.
Initial situation
Regional electricity production is dominated by coal-fired power plants. Thanks to the project, part of this electricity can be replaced with renewable energy. The project thus not only reduces CO2 emissions, it also alleviates the region’s power shortage and makes it easier for the population to switch from wood to electricity for cooking and heating.
Due to Klimarappen
This project stems from the Asia Pacific Carbon Fund (APCF), in which the Foundation holds a stake of 25 million US$.
Savings
Overall, the APCF has secured 294’093 CERs by contract for the period 2008 to 2012. The Foundation will receive 16% of these.
