Wastewater treatment plant on Fiji

Project

The existing Kinoya wastewater treatment plant on Fiji was fitted with an exhaust system, which captures the methane generated by the fermentation of waste and flares it in a controlled manner.

Project owner

Republic of the Fiji-Islands

Initial situation

The fermentation of waste in the wastewater treatment plant generated methane, which was released unfiltered into the environment. Methane is 21 times more harmful than CO2 in terms of its greenhouse effect.

Due to Klimarappen

This project stems from the Asia Pacific Carbon Fund (APCF), in which the Foundation holds a stake of 25 million US$.

Savings

Overall, the APCF has secured 44'938 CERs by contract for the period 2008 to 2012. The Foundation will receive 16% of these.
