Waste utilisation in Palembang in Indonesia

Project

In order to prevent methane from escaping at the waste disposal site in Palembang, a facility was built that on one hand uses methane to generate electricity for the entire landfill, and on the other hand flares the remaining gas to render it harmless. The project owner has furthermore established a Community Development Plan, which improves residents’ life quality, education and income generating options.

Initial situation

Through fermentation, organic waste in the municipal landfill generated methane. Methane can cause fires and explosions, and it is 21 times more harmful than CO2.
