Landfill in the State of Tamil Nadu in India
Project
Replacing six surface landfills, facilities are being built in which the aerobic breakdown of waste will occur in a controlled manner. One day, these six facilities will transform a yearly 192 kilotonnes of waste into compost. The compost will be distributed to local farmers. The formation of methane will thus be curbed and waste utilised in a meaningful way.

Initial situation
Up to now, the waste of six municipalities in the State of Tamil Nadu was collected in surface landfills. This solution was a hazard to the environment and to the population’s health, and the methane generated through fermentation was released into the atmosphere. Methane is 21 times more harmful than CO2 in terms of its greenhouse effect.
Due to Klimarappen
This project stems from the Asia Pacific Carbon Fund (APCF), in which the Foundation holds a stake of 25 million US$.
Savings
Overall, the APCF has secured 105'732 CERs by contract for the period 2008 to 2012. The Foundation will receive 16% of these.
