Gorai landfill in India
Project
On the Western edge of Mumbai, the Gorai landfill covers 19.6 ha. Waste fermentation newly takes place in a fermentation facility; the methane that is generated is collected and used to generate electricity, which is fed into the regional power grid, where it replaces fossil electricity. The landfill waste is thus utilised and the remaining methane is flared in a controlled manner.
Project owner
Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM)
Initial situation
During fermentation, waste in the Gorai surface landfill generated methane, whose greenhouse effect is 21 times that of CO2. The surface landfill furthermore had negative repercussions on the local population’s health.
Due to Klimarappen
This project stems from the Asia Pacific Carbon Fund (APCF), in which the Foundation holds a stake of 25 million US$.
Savings
Overall, the APCF has secured 300'235 CERs by contract for the period 2008 to 2012. The Foundation will receive 16% of these.
