A mountain of change in Israel
Project
The project uses methane resulting from the fermentation of waste material to generate electricity. To this end, waste at the formerly open-air landfill was covered in order to collect the methane, a gas whose greenhouse effect is 21 times higher than that of CO2. The power thus generated replaces electricity stemming from fossil sources. Thanks to the project, the landfill waste is utilised, methane does not burden the environment anymore and the surrounding population benefits healthwise as well as in terms of an embellished landscape.

Initial situation
Since 1954, household waste had been disposed of at the simple landfill "Hiriya", leading to groundwater pollution and methane emissions. Moreover, the landfill is located in a populous region and was burdening the population with disagreeable smells, waste scattered by the wind and an eroding waste heap. Besides, flight safety was compromised by the gathering of birds above the waste heap. The open-air landfill was covered up in 1998.
Savings
654‘000 Tonnen CO2
