Biomass plant in India

Project

Poultry manure is used to operate a biomass plant.

Project owner

Raus Power Limited is a private company active in the sale of automobiles and the distribution of petroleum products of the companies Reliance Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum. Since 2003, it has also successfully been operating a cogeneration plant.

Initial situation

The region surrounding the village of Duppalapudi in Andra Pradesh, a few hours’ drive north of Chennai, numbers numerous large poultry farms. The disposal of poultry manure is problematic; it is even used as fish feed and thus damaging the environment.

Due to Klimarappen

Thanks to the Foundation, a biomass power plant has been built. The accruing poultry manure is laid out and dried in the sun. It is then mixed with rice husks in order to increase its combustibility. The mixture is fed into the combustion chamber of the fluidised bed boiler. In order to fluidise the combustible mix, air is injected at the bottom of the boiler, separating solids and liquids. The combustion generates hot gas, which is fed to a turbine via the boiler. Since early 2009, a yearly prospective volume of 26 GWh of electricity is produced and injected into the power grid of Eastern Power Distribution Corporation of Andra Pradesh Ltd. 10% of produced power go towards the power plant’s own requirements.
