Mawana sugar refineries in India
Project
Electricity is produced from biowaste generated by the production of sugar, using the steam arising in the production process. The electricity thus produced supplies the sugarcane shredder, and excess electricity is fed into the regional power grid, where it replaces fossil electricity.
Project owner
Mawana Sugars Limited is India’s seventh largest private sugar refinery. The factories are all located in the State of Uttar Pradesh.
Initial situation
Sugar production was operated with fossil energy. The steam and biowaste generated in the process remained unused.
Due to Klimarappen
This project stems from the Asia Pacific Carbon Fund (APCF), in which the Foundation holds a stake of 25 million US$.
Savings
Overall, the APCF has secured 308'000 CERs by contract for the period 2008 to 2012. The Foundation will receive 16% of these.
