Manure management system on pig farms in Ecuador

Project

Reduction of methane emissions by way of a manure management system on three different pig farms.

Project owner

Pronaca is an experienced, large company with a long tradition in pig, chicken, perch and prawn farming. The company is also active in the processing of meat and fish, in the agro business and in the production of animal foods. Pronaca owns production sites in Brazil, Columbia and the US.

Due to Klimarappen

The manure management system is used on three pig farms belonging to the same project owner in the town of Santo Domingo de los Colorados in Ecuador. The project meets the most exacting environmental and animal protection standards. In opposition to traditional pig farming climate protection projects, no manure pit is covered with a hermetic sheet to then suck out the methane which is generated. In this project, rice husk residues create a 60 cm thick underlayer. The rice husks soak up the manure and are then composted and used as fertiliser. Next to the reduction of methane, this project presents the advantage of saving water, avoiding the release of di-sagreeable odours and offering animals healthy, environmentally sound and comfortable surroundings.

Savings

202’704 tonnes of CO2.
